Fennes Fisheries
One of the largest coarse fisheries in Essex with a total of 14.5 acres of water with three spring-fed lakes within easy walking distance of each other.
A general mixed fishery with plenty of decent sized specimens with carp to nearly 20lbs that are bred and reared in the fishery's own off-site fish farm.
There are also good sized tench, bream, roach, rudd and perch.
Facilities include, all-weather car parks, tended banksides, platform pegs and well maintained ladies and gents toilets, it is also well equipped
to cater for disabled anglers.
There is also a well stocked on-site tackle shop which sells a wide range of fresh baits, rods, reels, poles and whips plus accessories including line,
floats, hooks, shot, etc. as well as cold drinks and confectionery.
Open from 7.30am until sunset all year round except Christmas Day & Boxing Day.
ASH GROUNDS :
An attractive 60 peg, six acre lake predominantly stocked with Mirror, Common, Ghost and Crucian Carp, also tench, bream, roach and a small number of rudd.
Because the water is used for both match and general pleasure angling, the larger double figure fish are regularly removed to the other two waters for pleasure and specimen anglers. As a result, the majority of the Commons average between two to 5lbs, although there are a few over the 6lb mark. The largest Common to come out weighed in at 11lb 10oz, with Mirror carp averaging the same size.
It also holds bream averaging between 3 & 4lbs but running up to 9lbs.The best perch specimen weighed in at 3lbs 10oz.
There are more than 1,000 yards of bank with several islands within casting distance. The margins are also home to a good mix of vegetation including Reed Mace, Bullrushes and water lilies which provide cover for both fish and anglers.
A favoured pole water with most anglers fishing between 9 and 14 metres in matches and between 5 & 6 metres when pleasure fishing. Unlike many lakes, fishing close to the bank does not tend to work.
In the warmer months sweetcorn and small pieces of luncheon meat about a quarter of an inch square tempt most carp, bream and skimmers. For the bigger carp fish an open-ended feeder towards the islands with a quiver tip rather than swing tip.
Using maggots in the summer tends to attract the smaller fish.
Popular floating baits include bread and Chum mixer.
Winter baits which work well include casters, worm and maggots.
Depths go to around 10 feet at the car park end,and 4 to 5 feet from half way up the lake to the point furthest from the car park.
Waggler works well, but most pleasure anglers fish the pole at between 4 & 5 feet deep up to the half-way mark and about 4 feet deep in the shallower top end.
THE PLEASURE LAKE :
A 4 Acre well stocked water with depths ranging from 2½ to 11 foot.
It is suited to anglers of all abilties and can be night fished plus some of the 24 swims are close to the car park making it ideal for the elderly or disabled angler.
It's tree lined and over grown margins offer some excellent close range fishing.
Stocks include plenty of tench in the 4lb+ bracket with the largest around 9lb.
The Bream are also growing well in here with the largest just over 12lb plus Perch to over 4lb and Roach to 1½lb.
A couple Carp from the Specimen Lake have also found their way into this water, with plenty of fish in the 3-20 lb bracket.
All methods seem to produce on this lake, trout pellets, sweetcorn, maggots and casters all catch well.
THE SPECIMEN LAKE :
With a total of 27 pegs this 6 acre water holds a large head of double figure Common and Mirror Carp with the larger fish going well into the upper 20 lb bracket.
Some of the original stock are still present of unknown sizes, but known to include over ten double figure ghosties and commons.
You can also find Pike to over 30 lb, Bream into double figures as well as large Tench and Perch to over 4 lb.
Depths range from 5 to 15 foot and is heavily reeded with a number of features spread throughout.
The Carp respond well to both particle baits and boilies, however bigger catches seem to come from larger beds of boilies, particularly fishmeal based baits.
Trout pellets and maize in quantities have also produced some good catches. Smaller versions of Carp baits
have produced some good bream and tench, as has sweetcorn and pelletts.
